Want a Thanksgiving table setting that is not only stylish but affordable too?  I have a couple fun and easy ideas that will make your Thanksgiving feel like a million dollars without breaking the bank. My theme this year is Pumpkin Patch.  I’m doing a menu card, a napkin ring and a favor at each of my guest’s place setting.

Thanksgiving Ideas: DIY Tree of Thanks & Thanksgiving Placesetting #BIgDot #HappyDot

I’m also going to put together a tree of thanks.  To keep my theme affordable several of the items I’m using including the table runner, candle holder, candles, pumpkins and gourds are all things that I have around the house and in my garden.   For my centerpiece I’m using a cake plate that I have and a tree branch pumpkin I purchased on sale at a local craft shop.  The personalized Pumpkin Patch theme items I found and purchased at BigDotofHappiness.com

Their Pumpkin Patch invitations are adorable and will work great as my menu cards.  I’m changing the personalization to include my dinner and dessert menu and their designers will do the rest.

    Thanksgiving Menu Card

For my napkin rings I’m cutting orange card stock paper into rectangular strips and adding a Pumpkin Patch sticker label to each one.  I’ll then place the napkin ring around the outside of my folded cloth napkin, secure the back and in just a few minutes I have an adorable napkin ring that matches my Pumpkin Patch theme.

I also want to send each of my guests home with something special, my way of giving thanks for their presence in my life.  The Pumpkin Patch classic favor boxes at Big Dot of Happiness caught my eye. I’m personalizing each box with the phrase Be Thankful and filling them with some home baked goodies.  I also have some adorable glass bottles I’m going to fill with candy coated treats.  I'm using the card stock tags that come with my classic favor boxes and attaching the tag to the glass bottles with a piece of brown satin ribbon.  Not only will that put a finishing touch on my favors but it helps to carry my Pumpkin Patch theme throughout my table setting.

Thanksgiving Ideas: DIY Tree of Thanks & Thanksgiving Placesetting #BIgDot #HappyDot

For my tree of thanks I gathered some branches from outside, placed them in a simple white pitcher. I added some glass marbles to the inside of the pitcher to keep the branches in place. I cut brown and orange card stock into pieces and folded them in half.  On the folded top left hand corner I punched a hole and tied a piece of white satin ribbon through the hole, I then placed a Pumpkin Patch sticker label with the phrase Give Thanks to each one

As my guests arrive I going to have each of them write on a card what they are the most thankful for and place their card on one of the tree branches.

After dinner each of us will go to the tree of thanks and read out loud a card of Thanksgiving. At the end of the day we will all have many things to be thankful for. I will be thankful for my family, delicious food and affordable decorations that made for a picture perfect day!!

There may still be snow on the ground here at When Pooch Comes to Shove headquarters but that doesn't mean the gardening hasn't begun. From yummy vegetable gardens to fabulous floral displays, the delicate little seedlings are being started. Nestled in the tiny greenhouses, soaking up sunshine from the warm indoors, each little guy will find a home outside as soon as the threat of frost is gone. BUT - then the threat of d-o-g is upon them.

The soft ground and smells of spring are hard to resist for any pooch. With a little planning and these tips, you can easily dog proof your garden so everyone can enjoy the backyard.

    Dog Proof Your Garden

When you are planning your dog proof strategy, it is important to make choices that are first, best for your dog, and second, healthy for the plants. Start with landscaping and ground cover that is easy for dogs to walk on and doesn't imbed in the fur of long-haired pups - but also one that will let the ground transfer moisture so mold doesn't grow and your plants can thrive.

After choosing the base of your gardens, decide on plants that are going to be tough enough to stand up to a romp by Fido. Smaller pups can probably romp through the violets once or twice without a lot of damage but a Labrador may not be so gentle. If you have a rambunctious pup, your best bet might be a hearty foliage garden full of hostas with just a few special annuals scattered about.

And finally, decide on a grass that will withstand your pups outdoor visits. Artificial lawn will wash up in the rain or with a pressure washer while sturdier grasses can handle the urine burn better than delicate grass varieties. There is also food additives for your pup that will reduce the nitrogen in the urine, stopping the lawn burn and topical treatments  for after Fido does his duty. It is best to review all of your options and make the choice that is best for you and your family.

Vegetable gardens will typically have a fence to keep out all the critters so it isn't quite as important to follow all of these tips but they are still good to keep in mind.

Most of all, make it a priority to not choose any plants that could be toxic or cause allergic reactions in your dogs or cats.

    THE SUPPLY LIST:
    - Fabric Scrap, cut into 3 pieces
    - Small Ponytail Holder
    - Hot Glue Gun & Scissors
    - Tag & Ribbon with Bag for Gifting

STEP 1 | Cut 3 pieces of fabric:
    2 - 5” x 7”
    1 - 1.5” x 4”
On the 2 large pieces: Glue the long sides onto each other.  Overlap one piece more than the other for two rectangles, one with a slightly smaller width than the other.

STEP 2 | On the 2 large pieces, glue the short sides onto each other. Overlap one piece more than the other for two rectangles, one with a slightly smaller length than the other.

STEP 3 | On the 1 smallest piece: Glue the long ends onto each other, similar to how you did it on the first large piece.

STEP 4 | Stack your larger pieces, smaller rectangle on top. It is starting to look like a bow tie now. Wrap with smallest piece under as the center band and lay ponytail holder across the stacked pieces.

STEP 5 | Snip the ends of the smallest center piece so they just slightly overlap and glue, being careful not to glue the ponytail holder.  Fluff and shape to be the perfect bow tie!

STEP 6 | Slide collar through the ponytail holder so your pooch can proudly wear their new festive bow tie - or wrap for gifting.

To gift, slide into a bag (we used clear), and tie off with a tag and ribbon.
