Friends of Meeko the Pooch: Blog Posts #PuppyShowers #DogBirthdayParties #PuppyPawties

WinterTipsOh, the weather outside is…weather. Sadly, I don’t have the Weather Channel, so I’m not sure how cold it really is outside, but I can feel it. My paws hit that frosty grass in the morning and I just know dreaded winter is coming. It’s the time of year where puppies like me are stuck in the house because our tails might freeze off out there. Although it’s chilly, it’s still important to get in your physical activity even in the winter, so I like to get walks in when I can. Here are a couple of tips for your wintry adventures outside:

Whoa Nelly - Don’t stay outside too long and make those pee breaks quick! Prevent frostbite on your ears, tail and feet by limiting your exposure. Also, take it easy! Your heart is working extra hard to keep you body warm, so don’t be running up a storm. Just like people, a run in the cold is a lot more strenuous than a run when it’s warm.

Gear Up – Dog boots are not silly! Believe me; you will thank me when you feel the warmth of fleece around your toes. Boots will not only keep you tootsies warm, but they will protect you feet from ice and salt. Also, consider a sweater or coat, especially if you have short hair. Your body needs to keep in all of the heat it can and sometimes your natural coat just won’t cut it.

Keep Shinin’ – Winter can be harsh on my sensitive skin! The chilly air can make my skin and coat so dry and brittle. Not only does it look bad, but it also reduces my coat’s effectiveness at protecting against the elements. Obviously, drink lots of water (snow doesn't count) to stay hydrated, but also limit your baths and brush regularly to distribute your natural oils. If you get a little stinky, try some pet wipes or pet mist to keep smelling fresh.

20° or Below, Please Don’t Go - As a rule of thumb, I stay inside if it’s under 20° F. If you are elderly, under 6 months old, sick or injured, you should skip your daily walk routine in any cold weather.

It OK to be inside if it’s too cold! Make it fun! Play games indoors, learn a new trick, or play with your toys. I heard some dogs even walk on treadmills! Whatever you do, stay safe and warm my pooch friends!

Style a winter wonderland candy buffet in shimmering blues and vivid black with inspiration from our Be Merry party decorations. Mixing iridescent blue and silver candies with jet black and stark white, this wintery buffet table gave guest an inviting display as they arrived.

Holiday Candy Buffet Ideas: Blue and Black Color Scheme #BigDot #HappyDot

The backdrop began with white, glitter snowflakes - 3 for $1 - such a deal. Plus, they looked magnificent. The different shapes and sizes were the perfect way to begin our holiday candy buffet.

Next came all of the DIY party decorations in the Be Merry theme.

IDEA 1 | Shaped cut-outs glued to toothpicks make ideal cupcake toppers when they are paired with a winter snowflake cupcake wrap.

IDEA 2 | Make the perfect party favor with a pyramid-shaped favor box filled with yummy treats. Let guests fill their own or pre-pack right before the party. (Just be sure to leave enough candy for an impressive display.)

IDEA 3 | Similar to the toothpick cupcake toppers but much larger and grander, personalized extra large table confetti glued to kabob sticks will make a great cake topper or buffet table accent.

IDEA 4 | Mix and match your candy sizes for a great display. Keep it the same color per container so it doesn't get too busy but play with the sizes until you get exactly the right look.

IDEA 5 | The sky is the limit with DIY favor wrappers! Wrap them around cylinders filled with candies, around large chocolate bars or even drink containers.

This holiday candy buffet was completed with chalkboard accents and white serving trays stacked with goodies. Find your own party inspiration with these holiday candy buffet tips and you are going to have a fab event!

With gifts to wrap, meals the plan, and lists to complete, it is a fun but overwhelming time of year. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, my house turns into Santa's workshop with gift wrap, tape and ribbon on the dining room table; a tree full of festive decorations in the living room; and a guest room hiding spot for super-secret toys. With all of the crazy happening, it is easy to forget the pet hazards that all of this holiday fun leaves behind.

Pet Safety: Holiday Hazards for Dogs #PoochPawty Pet Safety: Holiday Hazards for Dogs #PoochPawty

My furbaby is an old guy who lays around most of the day, gets up to eat and has to be coaxed outside to potty. He doesn't play much and doesn't get into too much trouble anymore. BUT - this time of year he rolls the age-clock back and turns into a puppy. I don't know why - maybe it is just the hustle and bustle that gets him excited, but once every year we get blindsided and come home to a living room disaster reminding us of the dangers this time of year brings.

This weekend we came home to candy wrappers ALL OVER! St. Nick arrived on Friday, treats were opened on Saturday morning, and then we left for the parade. That furmonster tore into packages of peanuts and wrappers of taffy - Thankfully it wasn't anything on the list of holiday hazards!

Please, share this list so everyone know of the holiday dangers in their home. It is a good reminder of what to keep away from your dog and a great reference in case an accident happens so you know the signs and symptoms.
