Top 10 Outdoor Party Tips - Bridal Shower Edition with Printable Checklist #BigDot #HappyDot

It’s the season of beautiful bridal showers and gorgeous brides. If you have chosen to celebrate at an outdoor venue, make sure to follow these easy tips to make your day as wonderful - and stress-free - as possible! Be sure to stay on task by downloading our free printable checklist.

    1. Save the elaborate bridal shower décor, like huge expensive bouquets of expensive flowers. Nature is your friend on this one, so let its beauty compliment your bridal shower theme.

    2. Clamp tablecloths down (or tape underneath the table) in case of a big gust of wind.

    3. Remind everyone at the party to use sunscreen. Keep some extra on hand for guests or create fun bridal shower favors with pretty bottles of sunscreen and a do-it-yourself craft tag.

    4. If your venue won’t let you hang lights, bring along some table lanterns for late-day or evening events.

    5. Pick a place with playground equipment for any children that may be attending.

    6. Be sure to make reservations early. Summer is also the season of graduation parties and family reunions, so park pavilions are in high demand.

    7. Go with outdoor-friendly food. It can be as simple as burgers and hot dogs or you can get fresh pasta dishes from a local restaurant. The object here is not to have to worry about catering and all it entails.

    8. Provide specific directions to the venue for bridal shower guests. (I learned this hard way, when one of my friends ended up driving around for a hour, gave up, and headed home.)

    9. Bring your stereo or iPod dock to play mixes of your favorite party music. The best part about this? There is no chance of hearing a song you don’t like, or of not hearing songs you love!

    10. Bring a few umbrellas just in case an unexpected summer storm comes your way.

Big Dot of Happiness has you covered on all your needs for this outdoor extravaganza. From the invitations to the decorations and tableware, we will help make your celebration YOU-nique.

I have been in customer service for about thirty years now. The first 20 were spent working directly with the public, face to face and hands on, the last nine years have been here at Big Dot of Happiness an internet based retailer where all of my customer service contact has been via phone, email and live chat. Two totally different types of customer service, both very challenging and rewarding all at the same time. As you can imagine having dealt with customers that many years I have seen and heard just about every kind of customer service experience you could image. So what have I learned over the years? I have learned first and foremost how to be a customer. Yes that's right, working in customer service has taught me a lot about how to be a better shopper and consumer. So today I thought I would share three of the things I've learned along the way.

    1. Ask for it. Just because you don't see what you're looking for doesn't mean they don't have it or can't get it. Here at Big Dot of Happiness our number one goal is customer satisfaction. If you're looking for a particular item and you can't find it on our website ask for it. Our expert experts in customer service will work with one of our designers or our purchasing agent to do what ever we can to get you what you want. A couple months ago I had a customer who was looking for just the insert on our lollipop stand for one of her customers. We normally don't sell just that one piece, but I worked with our purchasing agent and we were not only able to get the customer the pieces she wanted, but we were able to ship them directly to her customer for her. Had she just looked around on our website she would not have found what she was looking for, but she asked for it and we were able to get it!

    2. Read the description. While this pertains to website shopping probably more so than store shopping it still can make for a better shopping experience. You might have to scroll down a bit on the web page to find the description, but when you do you will find all kinds of helpful information such as size, color, weight, ingredients, and what's all included. Here's a perfect example of how reading the description can be helpful and time saving. We get numerous emails, phone calls and live chats each week asking if envelopes are included with our squiggle invitations (Don't get me wrong we love to talk, email, and chat with our customers) but by reading the description they would have noticed that it states not once but three times that envelopes are included with every invite order. I realize most people are in a hurry and just want to get their order done, but in this case reading the description would actually have saved time by eliminating a phone call, live chat session or waiting for an email response.

    3. Sign up for emails and promotions.
In today's fast paced world of social media and smartphones emails and text messages have become the way of communicating. It's a great way to receive coupons, new product updates and vital information regarding your order. At Big Dot of Happiness we use emails as our number way of communicating with our customers. We send out exclusive email campaigns with special savings, introduce new products and themes and also send all invoices and order tracking information electronically. Want a quick answer send us an email. Now I'm not saying to give your email and phone number out to just anyone, use caution and ask to make sure that like Big Dot of Happiness your information is kept private and not sold to outside vendors.

Can't find what your looking for? Didn't see it in the description? Wish you had a coupon code? Our Expert Experts are always here to help!!

Doughnut + Rainbow Chevron Birthday Party Supplies #BigDot #HappyDot
I just turned the big 3-0 and instead of mourning my 20's being over with a drab, dark "Over The Hill" themed party, I wanted to celebrate starting my 30's with a colorful "Over The Rainbow" party! Anyone who knows me will tell you that I have a special place in my heart and {more often} my stomach for donuts so they made a few appearances too.

Rainbow Birthday Party Ideas: Rainbow Chevron from @BigDot #HappyDot

I started with lots of goodies from the Chevron Rainbow birthday party theme. The table decoration kit came in super handy in a few ways. I used the pop up stands to decorate the food table and the confetti helped add some punches of color on the white table cover and tied around a mason jar that held the forks. I got a bit of multipurpose use from the cupcake wrappers as well. They not only looked great wrapped around my rainbow sprinkled cupcakes but they fit perfectly around 9oz plastic cups that I filled with other sweet treats.

Rainbow Birthday Party Ideas: Rainbow Chevron from @BigDot #HappyDot

I'm naturally a crafty person so I added some fun homemade touches to my party as well. I attached inexpensive rainbow colored streamers to a ribbon and draped them behind the food table. It gave a real wow factor to the table. My favorite decorations at my party were the donut details. I made the 30 donut banner and strung it up along the bottom of the table. The centerpiece was a donut shaped cake that I made with a bundt cake pan topped with rainbow sprinkles and a HAPPY bunting banner made from some leftover streamers. It was such a perfect touch!

I had a blast in my 20s but if this party was at all an indication of how much fun my 30s will be, I'm in for quite a ride!

With a few easy 4th of July party ideas, this Firecracker Bash was a totally custom, you-niqe way to celebration Independence Day. The first thing the guests noticed was the red, white and blue color combination. A step away from traditional, the light turquoise blue chevron party supplies was unexpected and loved by everyone.
Fourth of July Party Ideas: Red and Blue Chevron from @BigDot #HappyDot

I began planning with inspiration from the downloadable tags - Get yours here. I used the square tags as utensil wraps for the desserts and dressed up the placesettings by wrapping the plates and napkins with a ribbon, then sliding a printable tag into the center - see it close-up here. The bottle tag make our sparkling grape juice festive and hid the words on the label - win-win!

Fourth of July Party Ideas: Red and Blue Chevron from @BigDot #HappyDot

Personalized decorating kits are our all-time favorite party supply since they come with so many pieces - you can get really creative and use them for all of you DIY party ideas. I turned the Red Chevron large centerpiece into a cube and placed it at the center of the table. Next, I used the scalloped party circles from the red decorating kit with the round party circles from the Blue Chevron decorating kit to dress up our milk jar drink bottles. With a paper punch and some twine, the tags were doubled up and made a fun decoration - see it close-up here.

I also used the round party circle to sew a fun cake topper. By placing them back-to-back and sewing down the center and folding them in the center, then attaching to two striped straws, the angel food cake was dressed to impress! See a close-up here.

The kids absolutely ADORED the party hats. That was probably the favorite part of the event ... and the rock candy ... and the tassels! Let's face it, the kids had a blast. They had cake, candy, things hanging from trees that they could jump at. The tassels made a fun backdrop for the party and were super easy to make. You can find a tutorial here.

Fourth of July Party Ideas: Red and Blue Chevron from @BigDot #HappyDot

I completed the look with custom party decorations, including cupcake picks in the apple pie cups, cupcake wraps, mini favor boxes, hanging decorations and DIY party tags on top of red Sixlet candy favors. This Fourth of July celebration was as much fun to attend as it was to host.

I am soooo happy that summer is HERE in Wisconsin. It has been absolutely beautiful the last couple weeks and we have been lucky enough to be outside nearly every day. Rain or shine, we are outside. We have been having so much fun between the sprinkler, playground, community pool, bubbles, planting flowers, etc. that we hardly have time to sleep! I have included some of my Mommy/Kiddo Must Haves that have been so much fun this summer already. After waiting and waiting till my daughter could do more activities I now wish I could slow down such a busy bee. My step son as well- gaining more and more independence and not wanting to snuggle as often is hard, but being able to play outside and chase them around has been an absolute joy this summer!

My kids and I love to create new recipes. We found these popsicle molds on our latest trip to Ikea and we have been having tons of fun making our own popsicles. I cut up chunks of strawberries in our latest recipe and they turned out delicious! Here is the most recent recipe I used:

    • 4 cups fresh strawberries (frozen strawberries work, too)
    • 1/2 cup frozen white grape juice concentrate, thawed
    • 4 tablespoons sugar
    • 2 tablespoon fresh lime juice
    • 6 tablespoons water

Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Then place in your popsicle mold and freeze.

I hope you and your family enjoy your summer as well. Please share any new popsicle recipes too, we would love some new ideas!

    1. Banzai Aqua Drench 3-in-1 Inflatable Splash Park // We just purchased one of these slip and slides because our babysitter had one and the kids love it! Plus it is nice that it has a pool, slip and slide and the sprinkler part for the little kids to enjoy it too. Both of our kids- our 1 1/2 year old and 4 year old love this and I think have a secret plan to wear it out by the end of this summer.

    2. Imperial Toy Super Miracle B Solution with Wand // The bubble supply at our house has to be endless- we have had tears over not having enough bubbles! We play with them every single day outside and they are also a nice past time when we go to watch their dad Race, attending the latest farmers market, etc. We recently brought them to the nursing home to see my grandfather who enjoyed watching his great granddaughter run around chasing bubbles.

    3. Radio Flyer Fold 2 Go Tricycle // My 1 1/2 year old daughter is on her Tricycle every single day. We even bring it inside when it rains for her to zoom around. It also has a cool little trunk in the back so she can take her baby for a spin too.

    4. Crayola Outdoor 24 Ct Sidewalk Chalk // Chalk is another must at our house. You know you have found our home because of the awesome drawings out front where the kids have decorated..and the repeated places where both are trying to write their names!

    5. RIP Curl Women’s Gypsy Queen Swimsuit cover up//Don't forget something cute for mommy to wear while chasing after the kiddos playing outside.

    6. Chosigt Popsicle Mold // A mold to help with making the endless supply of popsicles that you will need this summer. I have found so many yummy recipes that include fruit, yogurt, juice, etc. Yum!!

Every Sunday when I was a little girl I would run up to my grandpa at church and crawl up on the pew next to him to watch him make me a paper boat. He would make all of his grandchildren boats to keep them entertained during church and was well-known for his boat making skills by other children in congregation. As I got older my grandpa taught me how to make my own paper boats and it has always stuck with me. Little did I know that this skill would become useful for my job one day.

Nautical anchor baby showers and birthday parties are a hot party theme right now, and we are in love with how customers are using paper boats to decorate their anchor parties. Here are some of our favorite paper boat trends and a step-by-step guide on how to make paper boats for your party.

How To Make A Paper Boat - DIY Nautical Party Ideas

    {What You’ll Need}
8 ½ in by 11 in paper (or any size cut into a rectangle)
    White String or Twine
    Wooden Skewers
Extra paper to make pennant banner for boat or backdrop

Love the nautical paper we used? Click here to download a free printable of the paper for your party.

Step By Step Instructions On How To Make A Paper Boat

Not only are paper boats fun party décor, they are also fun kid activities at parties. Check out our 5 paper boat birthday party ideas for kids.

Kid Birthday Party Paper Boat Ideas:

    1. Stop at step 6 in making your paper boat and you will have a party hat. These are the perfect party hats for a kid’s birthday party. The birthday boy or girl, and their guests can wear them at the party and they have the perfect look and style to match your nautical theme.

    2. Decorate the straws at your party with a mini paper boat, cut off the top of the triangle point of the boat and slip the straw through the middle.

    3. Use the straw boat décor as a name card for your party guests by adding a flag with your party guests' names to the top of the straw.

    4. Paper boats are also a great party activity for kids. Have each of the kids color an 8 ½ inch by 11 inch piece of paper and then make it into a boat. After the kiddos are done making their boats, use a kiddie pool to set-up boat races. The kids will have a blast racing each other and the fastest boat gets a prize!

    5. Sail on over to our Ahoy - Nautical Pinterest Board for more paper boat ideas and anchor party ideas.

Nautical Paper Boat Ideas For Parties

My grandpa making paper boats is a memory that I will cherish forever and a tradition that I will pass on to my son. I hope he enjoys having boat races with his cousins as much as I did. Happy sailing and we would love to see your paper boat creations.
